The Autonomy Fund

The Autonomy Fund has been created to ensure that regardless of changing political, social, and/or systemic priorities, Abortion Care Canada can remain dedicated to upholding abortion as a fundamental right, as essential healthcare, as paramount to the autonomy and freedom of women, trans, and non-binary people.

Bodily autonomy. Choice. Reproductive freedom. In Canada, many people believe that these are fought, won, and settled issues. However, accessing abortion care remains a complex, often privileged experience with barriers so significant that abortion is not truly an option for all those who need one. For over 17 years, Abortion Care Canada has confronted these barriers and facilitated abortion access across the country. Our work includes both longer-term efforts to improve systems, policies and community connectivity, as well as immediate, direct-impact initiatives such as increasing the number of abortion providers across the country through our education and training programs, and offering wrap-around support for abortion seekers who would otherwise not have access to care.

Why is the fund needed?

Abortion Care Canada has been funded through the Sexual and Reproductive Health Fund from the Government of Canada, alongside the generosity of our donors. We recently learned that our funding would not be renewed with just over three months remaining of our current agreements. While a key component of our previously created 2025-2030 Strategic Plan is to diversify revenues and ensure organizational sustainability, a loss at this time is devastating for the organization. This change impacts the ability to provide services and may ultimately result in full organizational closure.

Immediate challenges include:

  • Loss of 80% of the direct funding provided to abortion seekers in order to afford care
  • Closing of our Abortion Access program which not only facilitates the direct funding, but also provides emotional, social, and navigation support for clients who would otherwise be unsupported
  • Inability to offer professional and community training/education programs
  • Ending the flagship medication abortion training course which creates 300-400 new providers every year, directly increasing abortion access points across the country
  • Halting of emerging work focused on supporting disabled, newcomer, racialized and 2SLGBTQ+ clients, security consulting and safety planning, enhanced bilingual resources and additional projects removing barriers to care

Supporting the fund

The Autonomy Fund has two goals: to reinstate our ability to offer these vital services immediately, and to ensure that until the day we can truly, honestly say that abortion is an option for all those who need it, regardless of location, financial resources, identity, and more- that until that day- we will be here. Today we are asking for your help, not only to navigate this unexpected loss, but to be part of the future of abortion care in Canada. We ask you to join us in this pivotal moment where our community can demonstrate that no matter what, abortion access is a priority. To collectively say that bodily autonomy, choice, and reproductive freedoms are essential.
