Financial assistance

Systems navigation

I want an abortion but…. I don’t know where to start,
the information online is confusing, I can’t find who to call”

Abortion is common, but we know that it can be difficult to access and information available online can be unclear, untrue and misleading. This is why our Abortion Access team offers support to sort through the “who, what, where and hows” of accessing abortion care-  also known as system navigation.

During systems navigation, we can:

  • Provide accurate information about abortion care.
  • Refer you to abortion care facilities, sexual and reproductive health organizations, and community groups that support abortion seekers.
  • Provide ongoing logistics support, advocacy, information and more, from the start to end of your abortion experience

Financial assistance

We provide financial assistance for patients through the Dr. Henry Morgentaler Patient Assistance Fund (MPAF) and through funding allocated to us through the Sexual and Reproductive Health Fund (SRHF)  from the government of Canada. Many people need access to both funds, and our team will navigate that process for you.

Fees for accessing care

Through the MPAF fund, we are able to provide financial support for fees directly related to abortion care. This fund honours the legacy Dr. Henry Morgentaler, who brought the Supreme Court case that decriminalized abortion in Canada and in making abortion care services available to all who need them. While abortion care is typically covered by provincial and territorial health insurance, as well as federal plans, people may need to access the MPAF fund when they do not have coverage. This may include:

  • Gaps in coverage related to visa or immigration status
  • Specific scenarios for those with UHIP coverage
  • Not having/being able to attain in time a health card
  • Clinic fees which may be outside of the covered costs

Not sure if you’re covered? Our team will first help you identify if you have any insurance options.

The MPAF fund is sustained fully by donations. To donate to the fund, click here

Travel and logistics

Through the SRHF Fund, we are able to provide financial support for additional costs associated with accessing abortion care. Through this fund we work to ensure that individuals can access abortion regardless of their location, travel needs, and more.

People may access the SRHF Fund for costs such as:

  • Plane, train or bus tickets
  • Cab, ride-share or gas funds
  • Hotel rooms and associated fees
  • Meal costs incurred while traveling for care
  • Additional childcare fees incurred while accessing care
  • Other costs which may arise and create barriers to access

You deserve to access care, regardless of financial resources. It is unfair for individuals to bear the cost and responsibility of an abortion care system which is undersupported, underfunded and underdeveloped. One day we hope everyone will be able to access the care they need in their home communities, but for now we are here to help if you need us!
